At the last show of the 1999 season, the following message was read to the audience, after Merlin disappeared completely

To all my friends and fans who have watched my show for the past 25 years:

I thank you for your kind attention and loyalty. I have decided to vanish into my crystal cave for a while. When, where, how and in what form I will reappear is unknown at this time. When I do make my appearance once more, you will informed about it.

Before you leave, my assistants will be passing among you with their baskets. Please be generous to them, for they are orphans now, and they will have to hire someone to help haul off all my stuff.
